Laugh Or Die

By: Rick London

Just how bad do we need our daily chuckle? How important is laughter in our lives? For many years, we knew humor was fun, and laughter made us feel better, but we didn't know the full story. Recent studies at University Of Maryland Medical School point towards laughter being not just important, but pertinent to our physical well-being, social and career life.

Similar to exercising, laughter produces very similar endorphins that help preserve our immune system. Further research has shown that it even increases brain function which may even serve to increase IQ capabilities. As if all this were not enough, it is an ideal natural stress reducer. A lot of people in the world take life very seriously. If that is their coping mechanism, that is fine, but this can actually emotionally "shut the body down" and even cause premature death.

If laughter is one of the best stress reducers, and since we know that stress kills, why not create ways, or find ways in which it can be instilled in one's home, office, and life in general. It has also been proven to bring people closer together, forming bonds. Nobody is perfect. Even if we wish them to be. Not our kids, our parents, our co-workers, or even ourselves (as hard as that one might be to believe). But simply striving to do one's best, and taking a more lighthearted humorous approach to life, can help build new dimensions into our personal lives and in the workplace.

Funny. "Where is something funny," you may be asking. Various medias provide a myriad of laughs. You can rent movies in the comedy section of your neighborhood video store. You can go to large offbeat cartoon and/or humor sites on the Intenet

Want to help someone else laugh? Purchase them a funny T-shirt, gift or collectible. Most of them are under $20; some even under $5. You might be surprised at the reaction to these types of gifts. Oddly enough, you are "passing it forward", showing friends and loved ones that you enjoy humor and maybe they should explore it as well, and make it a part of their lifestyle.
